CONWAY, AR– Only a couple more months left of hammering, drilling and stapling at Marguerite Vann Elementary. A new building on campus grounds will look like a cafeteria, but will serve a bigger purpose. It’s a safe haven for students and staff. The other 8 elementary schools in Conway will get one too.
"We are in a tornado alley and the circumstances that have occurred in Vilonia and in Mayflower have stirred us to think about the safety of our students," says Greg Murry, Superintendent Conway Pubic Schools.
Superintendent of Conway Public Schools, Greg Murry, says the district is taking action now because they want students to have a safe place to stay in the event severe weather strikes. When the district voted on the plan, they thought about their next door neighbors too.
"If it’s after school, then certainly we would allow patrons and our neighbors around to be able to come into the safe room," says Murry.
The storm shelter will be able to hold around 500 people and is just feet away from the cafeteria. It will be used as a multipurpose building, not only to expand lunch services, but to also host assemblies.
"The other buildings will be able to use for P.E. and also for indoor recess," says Murry.
That’s all the district hopes this new building will only be used for. The storm shelters should be completed Spring 2018.
